Painting an Open Floor Plan
Open floor plans are popular because they offer a sleek, sophisticated aesthetic. They’re an incredibly functional floor plan, but choosing paint colors can be challenging. The Benjamin Moore paint experts at Red Star Paint & Decorating are here to help you select a color palette that wows with our tips for painting an open floor plan.
Don’t Forget Accent Walls
With a spacious open floor plan, accent walls are essential for adding a pop of color and character and distinguishing one area from another. The architecture of your home is often a fantastic guide for choosing where an accent wall should be. If your home has built-ins, arches, or a fireplace, those spots are ideal for creating a focal point with an accent wall. Accent walls are the perfect place to use vibrant colors since they often overwhelm spaces when you use them for multiple walls.
Add Lots of Texture
Texture is vital to any interior design but has special significance in open floor plans. The eye can wander in open floor plans, and texture creates a focal point for it to rest. You can add texture by painting exposed brick, using woven window treatments, or with accent pillows and area rugs.
Layer Lighting
An open-concept floor plan aims to help people feel connected, and lighting is an essential component. Sticking with overhead lighting as the only source will leave the corners of your space dark and uninviting, while the center of the area is too bright for comfort. If you love overhead lighting, use it with accent and task lighting to change the room's mood when you choose.
Keep Some Things Consistent
To keep a cohesive design, the flooring throughout your home should remain consistent. You can add color and texture with area rugs, but the flooring should be the same. Apply this rule to the trim, as well. Use the same color you choose to paint your trim in every space for a sense of continuity.
Stick to Your Palette
A perfect palette has three or five colors – white, neutral, and accent shades. Use these colors in varying concentrations to keep things visually interesting without being chaotic. The 60-30-10 rule suggests using a primary, secondary, and accent color in 60%, 30%, and 10% of the room, respectively. Switching the primary and the secondary colors makes the same colors look exciting and fresh in every room.
