Luckily, you don’t have to take this journey alone. Red Star Paint is honored to be your local Benjamin Moore dealer. We’ll guide you through every step of the way.
Types of Paint
Latex
As a general rule, most acrylic or latex paints work on most home surfaces, including:
- Stucco
- Brick
- Vinyl Siding
- Fiber Cement
- Wood Siding
- EIFS (Exterior Insulation Finishing System)
and more. But latex paints offer more than just being an excellent generalist paint. They’re also shown to have improved adhesion performance, limit mold and mildew growth, and lower VOC emissions. Not to mention, they can be painted at lower temperatures, making you less tied to the warmer months.
Our contractors can also attest to the speed benefits that latex allows. The water-based paint offers a shorter dry time, easier coverage, and less stressful cleanup. Latex paint provides a very pointed solution for those whose time is a concern.
Aura® Exterior Paint and Regal® Select High Build are our favorite choices for outdoor painting projects. These Benjamin Moore Latex paints are highly UV resistant (a defining factor for high-quality paint) and stand against the elements.
Oil
Where oil is an excellent solution for the bulk of the population, some swear by oil paint— specifically those who paint atypical surfaces. Latex paint is perfect for uniform surfaces (indeed, it lends a smooth and uniform appearance for years), and oil paint specializes in porous or distressed locations: particular types of siding, weathered wood, etc.
The benefits continue - you can more effectively paint a single coat of oil vs. a single coat of latex. Again, this is perfect for those who have long used oil paint, but applying multiple coats helps smooth out errors in individual coats for the average homeowner.
Homeowners who use oil paint should be wary of colors fading or yellowing over time. Where this is a detriment worth the benefits to some, this can be a turn-off for people not looking to repaint their house every couple of years, especially in areas that get lots of sun.
Paint For Doors, Siding, and Everything In Between
Painting the exterior of your house can encompass more than just the walls it’s made of. Your doors, siding, shutters, and more can also be renovated to really pop.
Doors
Your front door can either be a supporting character or the statement piece of your home. Regardless of which role it plays, we want it to play it well. Paints like Aura® Grand Entrance® have been formulated to bring vivid colors and long-lasting value to your door. This paint has many effects of oil paint, but while maintaining a latex chemical build.
Window Trim
Painting your window trim can be challenging (Hint: Use a 1½“ angled paintbrush) but rewarding. The same Aura® paint can be a good fit for window trim, and we love lighter colors for how they accent your window fashions.
Primers and Stains
Primer should be a part of every painting project, but stain doesn’t always get its time in the sun. Our primers are high-quality and designed explicitly for outdoor use: our favorite among them is our Fresh Start® Premium Exterior Primers. Contractors and consumers alike agree that this primer's benefits are second to none. For more details, reach out to us about which primer is right for you.
Stains are perfect for when you want to capture the natural patterns of the wood without sacrificing security or protection from the elements. Benjamin Moore’s ARBORCOAT® Exterior Stain is great for just that. It hides imperfections while highlighting the beauty of the wood itself.
